My husband and I went there to eat because he used to go there as a child the tortas were bomb!!! So was the breakfast plate we shared! Food portions are big! And I love how when they give you the chips and salsa they also give you a bowl of sopa!
Love this place! -

The chorizo tacos were by far the best tacos I've ever had! Service was relatively quick and the authenticity of the food was very impressive! Definitely recommend!

HUGE portions served up in this south side hole in the wall. (Seriously. We usually end up taking food home.)
Yeah -- LOTS of bang for the buck here.
The food itself is consistently tasty, too. (I do love a well prepared torta!)
I'm giving this place three stars in lieu of five because, well, the men's restroom was unbelievably dirty the last time we ventured into El Chavo.
Clean that shit (literally!) up, folks.
Ewwwww.
I utterly loathe the (commonplace in Mexico itself) disgusting practice of putting (URP!) used toilet paper into or next to the wastebasket instead of simply FLUSHING IT DOWN THE TOILET.
I understand the reason, yes. (Bad plumbing abounds down in Mexico. Fact.)
Still, there's no reason to risk spreading cholera here, nor typhus.
If the patrons are doing this crap (pardon the pun), well, it can't be helped. But what CAN be helped is a member of the staff going into the john and cleaning it up/sanitizing it with freaking bleach and water.
I'll visit El Chavo again, and will change this review to a five star Yelp rating if and when the men's bathroom no longer looks (nor smells) like a Third World cholera epidemic is on its way. -

The food is always great. Tortillas were so good! The bread for the tortas is super good! I would recommend this place to a friend.

My name is Aaron Shay. I heard about Chavo's tortas from an online article about great places to eat on SW 29th street. The first day I had one of the super Tortas, the bread was fresh and toasted. The meats and vegetables on the torta were fresh and delicious. The second time I had one of the house specialty machetes. The machete is kinda like a Mexican sub sandwich or a giant taco for lack of a better description. To start it is served on about a 2 foot long freshly made and toasted corn masa machete shell. Next was the seasoned steak, cheese, chorizo, onion, solantro, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and red or green sauce. Either the machetes or the tortas are so big that they can easily serve 2 or 3 people. The other great thing is that the sauces, onions, and solantro are served on the side (in case you don't love onions and solantro. lol) Next the service is fantastic. I have met the Owner, Chavo, Chavo JR., and 2 fabulous waitresses. Chavo's is my new favorite restaurant.
